AI vs Traditional Shoots: What Saves Money

A traditional product shoot for a D2C brand in India can easily run anywhere from ₹80,000 to ₹4 lakh per campaign. Studio rental, photographer day rate, stylist, model, props, food styling (if edible), retouching, two rounds of revisions. By the time the images land in your inbox, you’ve spent half your monthly marketing budget on twelve hero shots.

This used to be the only way. It isn’t anymore.

At Studio Okcaramel, we started experimenting with AI product photography about two years ago. Not as a gimmick, but because our D2C clients kept hitting the same wall. They needed more creative, faster, and more varied content, and the old model couldn’t keep up with how Meta and Amazon were eating into content.

Here’s the honest breakdown of what AI shoots actually change.

What AI does well: lifestyle backdrops, seasonal swaps (the same hero bottle on a beach, in a kitchen, on a Diwali table), aspirational scenes that would cost a fortune to physically build, and rapid A/B variants for ad testing. We’ve done campaigns where a single product generated 40+ usable scenes in under a week. Something that would’ve taken a month and a six-figure budget on a traditional set.

What AI still doesn’t do well: the product itself. The label, the texture, the actual hero shot of your bottle, your packaging, your SKU. That still needs a real camera. AI invents. For lifestyle context, that’s a feature. For your actual product, it’s a bug.

So the smart D2C playbook isn’t AI instead of photography. It’s AI combined with a tight, focused traditional shoot.

Here’s the rough math we see with our clients. One focused product shoot (the hero) plus AI-generated lifestyle, seasonal and ad variants on top. Total cost drops 50 to 70%. Output volume goes up 4 to 5x. Speed to launch a new campaign drops from weeks to days.

That changes the game for a small D2C brand in India that’s trying to test, learn, and scale on a startup budget.

There’s a bigger shift underneath all this. The old D2C playbook was: shoot once, run forever, hope it works. The new playbook is: shoot smart, generate constantly, iterate weekly, kill what doesn’t work. AI is what makes that economically possible for brands that don’t have Mamaearth-sized budgets.

But here’s the part most agencies skip. The creative direction matters more, not less, when AI enters the room. Bad prompts produce bad ads faster. The thinking still has to be sharp. The brand voice still has to hold. The reason a customer stops scrolling still has to be earned.

We use AI as a multiplier on good creative. Not a substitute for it.
